Bedford Blues Athletic Colts 19 - 17 Old Scouts Colts
By Chris Shacklady
A Solid Start to 2017 by the Colts.
Bedford Blues Athletic Colts hosted Old Scouts in their first match of 2017 in what was initially a dry afternoon, but heavy under foot which led to a game of two halves.
Old Scouts kicked off, but the ball didn't make 10m, pulling the restart back to a Bedford scrum. Bedford made some ground through the middle of the field and met some sturdy defence from Old Scouts who seemed to be missing a number of players who were fielded in the friendly back in late October. Bedford scored first through a try from Finn Jones on the right wing to lead 5-0 after only 6 minutes. Old Scouts kept at it and replied on 17 minutes having camped in the Bedford 22 for at least 10 minutes, the ball was distributed wide to the right wing and the winger crossed to score a converted try to make it 5-7. With the weather starting to take a turn for the worse, and injuries to both teams, it wasn't until the 31st minutes that Bedford elected for a penalty scum on the left hand side and after the ball was won, Ashley Pollard hit the line hard to break through the middle to score a converted try to make it 12-7. With Bedford in the ascendancy, they gain broke the Old Scouts defence with a deft kick through the defence by Pollard to be collected by Finn Jones who crossed the line and placed the ball down neatly under the posts, not quite within 90 seconds of the previous score, the make it 19-7 at half time.
The second half was much more controlled as both teams kept their defence tight and there was little opportunity to score. Old Scouts scored on 45 minutes on he right hand side to bring the match closer at 19-12, only narrowly missing the conversion. In the last play of the match, Old Scouts pressed hard on the left hand corner and found space to place the ball over the line, but the conversion was missed giving Bedford the win at 19-17.
