ON's Colts 22 - 17 Bedford Blues Athletic Colts
By Chris Shacklady
A strong performance in a tight game.
Bedford travelled to our friends and long term rivals Old Northamptonians on Saturday. With decent conditions, the stage was set for another great encounter and as the game unfolded, the spectators certainly weren’t disappointed in what was a most entertaining fixture, some great running rugby and superbly executed tries by both teams.
Pouncing on a handling mistake by Bedford, ON’s were first to score after only a few minutes from the kick off. However, the Bedford Colts were keen to demonstrate that some of our recent squad discussions had been taken on board. They kept their cool and continued to focus on their performance both individually and as a team.
Despite being short of a few players due to injury and loosing another playmaker early in the game, Bedford displayed probably their best rugby of the season so far, playing a sensible tactical game with the physicality we know they are capable of.
Were it not for a few unusual Bedford handling errors giving back possession and opportunity to ON’s the score line and outcome may have been different.
This fixture between these two teams has always been an historically close encounter and Saturday was no different, with just one score yet again separating the two. There will almost certainly be another opportunity this season for these teams to meet again as we are likely to meet in the league play offs.
Good rugby from both teams and an entertaining match for the spectators. Thanks to ON’s for hosting and always providing healthy opposition.
