Over the summer months, plenty of work has been going on at the Ath. A brand new Artificial Grass Pitch (AGP) has been installed, funded by the RFU. This will be a great resource for the local rugby community and Bedford Junior Blues look forward to having use every Sunday morning during the season. Age Groups will be allocated access time during the season by our Operations Manager.
When not reserved for rugby by Bedford Athletic or Bedford Junior Blues, the facility is available for personal hire at a cost here. The surface is suitable for Rugby Union, Football, but NOT Hockey.
The AGP is a artificial grass carpet with long strands of nylon/plastic that have sand and rubber crumb granules to keep the grass separated. If the granules become compressed rather than separated, the pitch loses ability for studs to grip the surface and will ultimately damage the pitch and potentially cause player injuries.
The only footwear that can be worn on the pitch, either for training or for matches, is clean boots with moulded or screw in studs. Boots with blades and trainers cannot be worn on the pitch. This applies to anyone who passes through the pitch gate, including coaches, physios, first-aiders, team managers, non-playing players, referees, assistant referees, etc. This rule also applies to anyone else using the pitch, including all other clubs, organisations and hirers who have booked the pitch and opposition teams. It goes without saying that all spectators should remain behind the pitch barrier at all times.
Access to the pitch must only be through the gate access point in front of the clubhouse - do not climb through the fences at any time as footwear worn on grass/mud will be contaminated. The gate access point has footwear cleaning facilities.
